Flight Plans

Flight plans are an important part of maintaining the safety of man and machine in space. Though space is very empty, collisions and various accidents can still lead to disaster. The primary reason for requiring flight plans is to double-check all navigation calculations. While navigators diligently check and re-check navigational data, a final check by an independent source ensures that mistakes are corrected early. Second, the flight plan allows STC computers to verify that no conflicts for orbital space are encountered. When close to a planetary body, a vessel cannot see what is on the other side, so potential conflicts are avoided. (Filing a flight plan requires working communications to transmit a copy to an STC center; a copy may be delivered by hand if the vessel is docked at a facility, but departure permission is often denied to vessels without SpaceNav-approved communications systems.)
